I had my first exhibition due to start in about a week. The key holders to the West Pier had said I could go out alone on the pier as long as I stayed on the 'safe routes' as were used for guided tours. I just had to pick a day. I knew it was the day. The sun was bright the air clear, wind still. But I wanted to wait for the sun to move to the east later in the day. About 4pm. It would be lower then, getting into the side of the building and casting shadows wherever its light struck. It was probably the wait that made me excited more than anything. I felt truly privilaged to be allowed out alone on such a beautiful and iconic structure. And of course I had no intention of 'sticking to the paths'! This window frame was behind me as I tentatively climbed some stairs. Every step was taken with care to test the rotting floors. It was an obvious 'frame' for a shot with Regency Square in the background. I took one frame and started moving away when I heard the birds start to take flight. Hence I quickly turned and managed to catch them as they passed. Well, actually I didn't know till the film was processed later by Tony at MonoLab that I had got them. The whole series of photos I called 'Ghost' - just because I was acutely aware of the past as I wandered the building on such a still day. We'll put more up from this series soon.
