“Fieldwork is the result of twelve years spent collecting different versions of the same thing. It’s a scrapbook of shapes, patterns, colours and light which define the South Downs. My approach is not about finding a singular ‘decisive moment’ but instead deciding to be there for as many moments as possible. This is a place that speaks to me more deeply than anywhere else, and this is my attempt to compile a kind of visual dialect to describe it.”
The book features more than 100 photographs of the South Downs, accompanied by a selection of words from the ancient Sussex dialect which evolved to describe some of the subtleties of this unique landscape.

Roger Bamber, for fifty years one of Britain’s leading photojournalists, has poured his life’s work into this unique reflection of a career that encompassed not only riots and bombings and the crazy world of rock and pop in the twentieth century but recorded with a sympathetic eye the demise of traditional British industries and the old steam railways. His graphic photographs are well known for their distinctive, often wryly humorous, style and strong visual impact and have been widely published worldwide.
He was twice British Press Photographer of the Year, twice British News Photographer of the Year and won many awards for his features on the arts. Towards the end of his career he worked mainly for the Guardian and was happiest finding creative people with a story to tell. He preferred working outdoors, ideally within sight of the sea, and showcasing ordinary people – celebrating just how extraordinary all of us can be.
The book accompanies an exhibtion at Brighton Museum and Art Galleries.

The South Downs is a landscape best known for its rolling grassland and wide open views from the hillsides to the sea. Surprising then, to learn that it has more woodland than any other national park in England or Wales. However, there are no great forest wildernesses here, and every inch of ancient woodland, traditional coppice and managed plantation is owned and accounted for. There are too many ‘private’ signs and barbed wire barriers, but with a little persistence it’s still possible to disappear into the trees and find a spot that feels entirely your own.
