660 million batteries are bought each year in the UK, an average of 21 per household. When taken to landfills, most batteries release harmful metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium into the environment. Many councils including Brighton don’t recycle them, but there are recycling stations about. I borrowed these batteries from The Green Centre who collect them every Thursday at Brighton’s Open Market.
